Hollie Davidson (Scotland) has been selected to officiate the last match of the Rugby World Cup 2021, which will take place between the tournament hosts, New Zealand, and England at Eden Park on the 12th of November. World Rugby made the announcement today.
Hollie Davidson is the fourth female to take charge of a Rugby World Cup final
Following in the footsteps of Sarah Corrigan (Australia, 2010), Amy Perrett (Australia, 2014), and Joy Neville (Ireland, 2017). She is also the second Scottish official to referee a women’s Rugby World Cup final, following in the footsteps of Jim Fleming in 1994. Davidson made her test debut on November 9, 2018, when England defeated the United States of America 57-5.
It will be Hollie Davidson’s 26th test as a referee when the RWC 2021 final takes place, and she will make history by being the first woman to referee Rugby World Cup finals in both the sevens and 15s formats. She will have accomplished this remarkable achievement in the span of just 62 days.
Ben Whitehouse of Wales will serve as the television match official for the final, and Aimee Barrett-Theron and Aurélie Groizeleau of South Africa and France, respectively, have been selected to serve as assistant referees for the contest (TMO).
The bronze final will be officiated by Joy Neville (Ireland), Sara Cox (England), and Lauren Jenner (New Zealand), with Ian Tempest (England) serving as the technical match official. The referee in charge of the match will be England’s Sara Cox.
Alhambra Nievas, the manager of referee talent development for World Rugby, made the following statement today: “The 18 match officials who have participated in Rugby World Cup 2021 have worked extremely hard to guarantee that they have been at their best.” They have done an excellent job, giving consistent performances on each game day, and I would want to congratulate everyone of them for the hard effort and devotion they have shown during this season.
“2022 has been an incredible year for Hollie. She has been in charge of some of the most important tournaments in sevens and 15s, including the women’s finals at the Commonwealth Games and the Rugby World Cup Sevens. Additionally, she made history when she became the first woman to be selected as a referee for a men’s Six Nations squad, officiating Italy’s victory against Portugal by a score of 38-31. We would like to take this opportunity to offer Hollie our most sincere congratulations as she gets ready to referee the last match of the Rugby World Cup 2021 this coming weekend.
